It has become a tradition in many places for ribbons of different colors to represent different things. Some of us would like to spread awareness about these things, so a tattoo is a good conversation starter. Others like to remember people and how we lost them, so the ribbon simplifies that process.
In the USA the idea of a ribbon representing something seems to stem from a European song "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon". A song about a woman waiting for her lover to return from the war. The yellow ribbon then started being tied around trees to show that a household was waiting for a veteran to come home. Over time other colored ribbons began to be used to represent different things.
