Often called Foo Dogs, it is more widely believed by scholars and believers that these are representations of lions. They are meant to protect and aid the residence, temple, or business that they are placed around or within. Placement is often debated between cultures and the purpose intended. One always seems to represent nurturing and the other wealth. Wealth is not always viewed in eastern theology the same way as it is in western. Wealth can be spiritual, health, or (of course) monetary.
