Lotus Tattoo Designs

The lotus flower, like most flowers, has multiple meanings to multiple cultures.

To the Buddhists it represents rising above the mud and the muck which can symbolically be present in life to find enlightenment. The color can play a role as well, purity of mind and spirit (white), compassion (red), wisdom (blue), Buddha (pink), mysticism (purple), and complete enlightenment (gold).

The Hindu meanings include the first Buddhist representation but with the inclusion of references to their deities in relation to creation and ascension to a higher plane of existence.

As with most things in the Egyptian culture the lotus (Theirs was actually a water lily, but apparently people have been confusing these two flowers for thousands of years!) represented creation, death, and rebirth. It was also, of course depending on the time period, associated with the sun to some degree.
